Spring time in the heart of Texas is truly a sight to see. The hills in the south of Texas come alive with wildflowers, covering every roadside for miles. If you are in search of the perfect spot to take your family’s annual bluebonnet picture, we have the perfect road trip for you! Late March or early April is the perfect time to drive down and enjoy this once a year art show. Since wildflowers only rule the land for a short while let us show you where to start!
Fredericksburg has always been one of Texan’s favorite places to visit. Not only do they have wine for days, they have Wildseed Farms. Located on Hwy 290, they have fields of bluebonnets and poppies used for seed harvest. They have most fields fenced off but there are places you can sit among the flowers and get your family picture or enjoy their peach ice cream.
Going North from Fredericksburg toward Llano you will notice a lot of traffic, that’s because the beautiful Willow City Loop is just off Hwy 16. This loop follows county roads winding through the hills covered in wildflowers. The land is private property so there isn’t much room for picture taking but there are a few roadside spots. This loop is well known and crowded on the weekends so during the week is best to get the full view of the flower covered hills.
Llano is also covered from north to south along Hwy 16 in bluebonnets and paintbrushes. The most colorful is usually Oxford Ranch Campground. You can make a loop off of Hwy 16 around Hwy 71 to the ghost town of Pontotoc, TX and see even more of what Texas looks like in the spring. This area didn’t have as big of a bloom in 2018 as usual, but with more rain they are expecting a bloom like never before in 2019.
Coming back through Llano and continuing East on Hwy 29 is Kingsland TX, This town has a unique picture spot. The decommissioned railroads fill up with bluebonnets and make for a beautiful place to capture your family memories. The landowners along the tracks have been known to even rent out camping spots to give better access to families and their photographers for these photo shoots. Follow FM 1431 and you will find not only railroads but fields of our state flower.
Continuing on to find wildflowers you can head east to Round Rock, TX. Along the way you will drive through several little Texas towns also bathed in the color of wildflowers. But like Kingsland, Round Rock has its own beautiful spots of wildflowers. Old Settlers Park has over 40 places to picnic among the bluebonnets and paintbrushes. On the out skirts of town lies several historical cemeteries that are lush with wildflowers as well.
You can find our blue and white state flower along just about any Texas state highway in the spring. But early April in the hill country is truly unique. The rolling hills of color and the historical feel of the land make it a place of euphoria and peace. You just have to go see it to know what we mean…
